Beyond the headlines
The energy story behind Bitcoin mining
Bitcoin mining gets called a waste of electricity. That's not the whole story.
Mining is energy arbitrage: buy cheap or stranded power, turn it into bitcoin. Miners chase the lowest-cost energy, which often means hydro, flared natural gas, or excess wind and solar that has nowhere else to go.
That demand can make remote power projects pay off. It also gives grid operators a flexible load they can switch off quickly when homes and businesses need the power more.
At the bottom, Bitcoin mining converts energy into money that can move anywhere. That is why it matters for energy.
Who's Ringoshi?
I'm an independent educator who got tired of watching people jump into Bitcoin mining on hype and vibes, with nobody explaining the real picture. So I decided to be that person. I'll help you understand this well enough to make your own decision.
